In partnership with #ArtStartsHere, July 25-August 2
The Fort Wayne Museum of Art Chalk Walk has been a trademark event held on Main Street in downtown Fort Wayne since 2000. The event is based on an Italian tradition of street painting that dates to the 16th century, known as i madonnari (street painters). Using pastels, artists of varying levels of experience may choose to reproduce existing artworks or create their own in their designated square. The event typically draws 40,000 people to see the spectacle unfold.
For 2020, we present Chalk Walk At Home in partnership with #ArtStartsHere in response to the reality that it’s not yet safe for us to gather in large crowds. The 2020 eventwill still provide the opportunity for creative people to experience the thrill of making chalk art outside without the crowds of people.
As it is every year, our goal is to draw the city’s most creative citizens together to contribute to the largest community art project in the region, attracting families, friends, and supporters of a vibrant cultural life in Fort Wayne.
Participants will create their chalk art at home on a sidewalk, paved driveway, or other safe cement/asphalt surface you have access to. Working in public streets poses safety hazards, so we do not recommend working in the street. Please also seek the proper permission before working in an area that is not your property.
Participation is free, but you must create an online account with our image uploading system in order to participate. Once your registration is complete, you may upload your image to be part of the online public gallery!
To be included in the online public gallery, you must use chalk pastels or sidewalk chalk on a cement or asphalt surface outside. We will not accept paintings or other media on other surfaces.
The first 500 registrants will receive a FREE “Chalk Walk 2020 At Home” goodie bag with 24 ct. pastels and sponsor promotional items. Pickup dates are listed below. – We have reached 500 registrants! Thank you for your support and please continue to sign up and share your chalk art with us!
$100 cash prizes are awarded to winners in each category (except for the “Under 12” category). Winners are chosen by a panel of judges from FWMoA and the community, except for the People’s Choice Award, which is chosen by the public. One square may be selected as the 2021 T-Shirt art, but this will not be a competitive category this year.
